How we fletch the arrows

  • Prepare the shafts: Gently scuff using fine sandpaper or use a knife to clean out old glue. Clean thoroughly with alcohol or brake cleaner.
  • When it comes to applying vanes, my go-to choice is the Bohning double-sided tape. The process is simple: lay the tape flat with the adhesive side up, secure the ends with regular tape to the table, and then apply the vanes one by one. In this demonstration, I show how to mount the new Jet-6 S vanes, which can easily be trimmed into individual pieces using scissors afterwards.

To streamline my workflow, I like to prepare a batch of vanes in advance and store them in a separate bag for quick swaps when needed. This method allows for efficient on-the-fly servicing =)

For consistent fletching positions, a fletching jig is used to achieve a precise offset/helix. The Beiter tri-liner is employed to mark guidelines ensuring proper alignment for vane mounting. Adjust the red holders accordingly to maintain consistent line lengths with each application. Marking is done using a solvent-based pen for accuracy and repeatability.

  • Make sure to align the vanes with the markings on the shaft. Position the rear of the vanes approximately 1" from the nock or flush against Beiter out-nocks.
  • Secure the front of the vanes using wrapping tape. For added protection, consider using over-nocks to cover the rear part of the vanes. I recommend using Custom arrow wrapping Tape in clear color for easy installation and consistent weight distribution.
  • Before shooting the arrows, always double-check the rotation to ensure vane clearance against the bow.
